Workflow Technology

Workflow technology allows to automate streams of tasks in organization, and is based on the following terms, which can be extended if needed:

  • object - some object used in process (ex., document, chart, tool);
  • event - some action, performed or with object (ex., document signed, chart changed, tool broken)
  • operation - action, being performed within some given business process (ex., document legal verification, doing changes in chart, repairing the tool)
  • performer - person, responsible for making action in the process (ex., attorney, designer, serviceman)

Each workflow system provides solution for at least the following three tasks:

  • process definition
  • process performance management
  • process performance monitoring

To define the process it is necessary to distinguish it from other processes in organization, properly structured and formalized. Process definition is based on it's operations, conditions of transitions from some operation to another ones, assignment of performers on operations, which should be performed along the process
